Under Construction – Commercial Renovation
This project is the adaptive reuse and renovation of a historic building along one of Savannah’s most prominent commercial corridors — E. Broughton Street. The client, owner of Planet Fun — a beloved retro toy and game store — purchased the building to expand the shop’s physical footprint in response to overwhelming community demand.
The design challenge was to create a space that honored the character of the existing building while fully embracing the playful, nostalgic spirit of Planet Fun’s brand. What emerged was a style I affectionately call: Classy Retro.
We preserved and celebrated the remaining architectural elements, including:
Exposed original brickwork
Aging but beautiful copper coffered ceilings
Damaged early-20th-century tile, previously hidden beneath decades-old carpet
Rather than replacing or covering these imperfections, we leaned into them — allowing the building’s layered history to become part of the aesthetic. These raw, historic materials became a backdrop for bold, colorful insertions inspired by vintage toys, arcade design, and early sci-fi film sets.
The result is a space where nostalgia meets elegance — a toy store for kids, collectors, and the forever young.
Planet Fun’s expansion not only preserves a piece of Savannah’s architectural history but actively contributes to the energy of Broughton Street’s cultural and commercial revival.
